History of My Bob’s Discount Furniture
Bob, a founder of My Bobs Discount Furniture had the idea to build a business that was inspired from a motorcycle accident and waterbeds. So what’s the connection between a motorcycle accident and waterbed? Bob had a motorcycle accident in 1976. After the accident, doctor suggested Bob try to sleep on a waterbed to recover. But in funny way, the motorcycle accident and the waterbeds led directly to Bob going into the waterbed business. Bob loves waterbeds so much, and then he decided to make a business of waterbeds.
In five different Wholesale Furniture stores through the Connecticut area. Bob first took about 2,000 square feet in 1982. Then Bob began to supply the waterbeds, started to advertise them, and did hand delivery to the customers, and then hired and trained the store’s sales staff on how to sell the waterbeds.
Bob’s business had boomed in 1988. In four New England states, he had 24 concessions. But, when the waterbed industry was beginning to change in 1990, it was pretty obvious. In Connecticut, waterbed dealers started going out of the business.
There is a Wholesale Furniture stores that owned by Gene Rosenberg. In these stores, Bob’s waterbed business had done very well. When Gene took a new 8,000 square foot space in 1990, in Newington, Connecticut, Bob and Gene teamed up. Nowadays, this store became the first store of Bob’s Discount Furniture.
